What are the dangers in consuming Xylitol? Xylitol, Sugar substitutes, Health Tips, Weight Loss & Diet Tips

Like most processed foods and additives, xylitol has it's own side effects as well.

Some of the side effects I discovered on the website www.livestrong.com. Which I believe has amazing articles and she talks about side effects such as:

• Diarrhea
• Tumors
• Weight gain
• Affects blood-sugar levels

Diarrhea will occur when you use xylitol in large amounts. When you take 40g per day expect a explosion to happen within the hour.

Tumors have been found to develop in adults that consume more than 50g of xylitol in a day. If someone takes xylitol in extremely high doses within a three year period, this may cause tumors to develop in your body. Children need to be limited to no more than 20g a day.

Blood sugar levels will rise in some diabetics when  they consume large amounts of sugar alcohols. Moderation is the key or be prepared for some weight gain to go along with the raised blood sugar levels.

Please be sure to keep all xylitol products away from your dogs!! Make sure to keep all candy, gum and medications with xylitol out of reach to any pet. There are warnings posted all over the internet regarding dogs being poisoned from xylitol products. They say xylitol poisoning is more deadly than chocolate!

Curious to find out why we can consume xylitol but dogs can't?

Well, humans absorb xylitol slowly and has no effect on blood sugar when consumed in small amounts. With dogs xylitol is quickly absorbed into their bloodstream. This will cause them to become hypoglycemic, cause liver failure, bleeding and death.

The effects of xylitol in cats is not clear at this time.

On average a half of cup of sugar is consumed per person every day and 150 pounds annually. Never in history has one person consumed so much sugar!

No wonder why we are so fat and have tons of health problems.

Consuming large quantities of sugar leads to diabetes and obesity in both kids and adults, hypoglycaemia, weight gain, high blood pressure, triglycerides, bad colesterol, increase of hard disease, tooth decay... you get the picture.

Substituting your sugar sounds pretty apealing after reading that list of health issues.

 
Even though xylitol looks and tastes like regular sugar, regular sugar can destroy your body while studies have shown xylitol could possibly heal and repair it. BLOG

Xylitol is a processed sugar alcohol.

Since I am all about natural I do need to stress that xylitol is made through a manufacturing process. But technicaly speaking all sugar alcohols are processed. If you don't know what a sugar alcohol is, please read more about it on the highlighted link above or below.

Sugar Alcohol Wiki states "Sugar alcohols are usually incompletely absorbed into the blood stream from the small intestines which generally results in a smaller change in blood glucose than "regular" sugar (sucrose). This property makes them popular sweeteners among diabetics and people on low-carbohydrate diets. However as for many other incompletely digestible substances (such as dietary fiber), over consumption of sugar alcohols can lead to bloating, diarrhea and flatulence because they are not absorbed in the small intestine."

I believe it's now time to look into the possible dangers in consuming xylitol. Until tomorrow.

Xylitol, as discussed yesterday BLOG, was used in my friends apple pie recipe (which I will get my hands on). The taste of the dessert shocked me and inspired this weeks worth of blogs! I love being inspired by desserts!

The benefits of this sugar substitute was even more shocking than the taste.

Benefits include:

• Prevents tooth decay and gum disease
• Helps prevent middle ear infections, nose and throat infections
• Reversing bone loss for Osteoporosis
• Helps with Insulin resistance, Diabetes Hypertension and Hormonal Imbalances
• Lowers cravings for sugar and carbohydrates

Sugar is acidic and weakens the immune system. Xylitol restores a alkaline/acidic balance in our mouth and makes it hard for the cavity causing bacteria to live in this inhospitable environment.

There is a xylitol nose spray which is sold everywhere and xylitol chewing gum. Both are shown to reduce bacteria growth that causes middle ear infections, allergy reduction, asthma and irritants that are caused by pollution.

 Studies have been done on rats in Finland (Note: I am highly against tests performed on animals, but I am here to present the studies.) show increased bone density with rats that had their ovaries removed. In older male rats there was a decreasing bone loss with age-related effects. Svanberg M, Mattila P, Knuttila M. Dietary xylitol retards the ovariectomy-induced increase of bone turnover in rats. Diabetics have a problem with the consumption of refined carbohydrates and sugars. Because of a rapid glucose released into the body, excess glucose gives the diabetic a system over load and causes the cells to stop responding to insulin. A dear friend of mine invited my sister and I for some delicious apple pie. Turns out he made the best apple pie I have ever tasted! I wish I had a picture to show you.

While eating the apple pie, nonchalantly he say's "By the way, this has zero sugar in it." Our jaw's dropped to the floor. He must have been pulling our legs! This was delicious!! I asked if he used stevia but it was another sugar substitute.

The secret is Xylitol. Instead of using sugar, he added Xylitol.

 

Not only is Xylitol used as a sugar substitute, but it's also used for other health benefits. Who would have thought?

Since I love to discuss sugar substitutes I thought it was only appropriate to make this week about Xylitol. I'm not talking about artificial sweeteners. I'm talking about extracting a sugar like substance out of roots and other foods to make low-calorie desserts!

What is Xylitol exactly?

• Xylitol is a carbohydrate that looks like a white crystalline substance that looks and tastes like sugar. 
• Occurs naturally in our body. We produce up to 15 grams of xylitol daily.
• Found in fibrous fruits and vegetables.
• 5gm of xylitol has 9.6 calories, compared to regular sugar which has 15 calories.
