Massages, like medicine should be prescribed: Healthy living

I’m first going to address the people who feel massages are not for them. This is what I hear: “I don’t want a strangers hands all over me.”, “I can’t keep still for a whole hour”, “It doesn’t do anything for me”, “I feel like it’s a waste of time”. There are all reasonable responses, but I see them more as excuses.

Break down

(feel free to skip this part if you love massages).

If you feel that you don’t want a stranger’s hands all over you. You are probably someone that doesn’t feel comfortable around many people in the first place. Many therapists and spas will allow you to meet the therapist before they massage you. If you don’t like the vibe or feeling they give you, meet someone else. You will eventually find someone that you feel comfortable enough working on you.

If you feel massage doesn’t do anything for you, usually this comes from someone that’s had a bad experience. Please know I’m open to all types of massage and I’m not bashing any modality, however, if you pay for a $30 Thai massage you will definitely get a $30 massage. You get what you pay for in most cases. Massages can run from $20- $300 an hour, depending on where you go.

By you saying you can’t keep still for a whole hour, lay off the coffee and calm down. I believe slowing down your pace is a message on its own. Self-care should be a daily, weekly and even monthly routine!

You think massage is a waste of time? What if you didn’t maintain your car? Depending on what type of car you drive, you will need an oil change every 3000 miles or 3 months, a service A, B or C after you drive your car for a certain amount of days. If you don’t, your car WILL BREAK DOWN! And guess what? No car! If you don’t maintain your body, it will break down. This is a proven fact! Maintain your body because you drive it every day. Your car can’t run on empty and either can you.

Benefits

Some of the benefits of massage begin with pain relief, reducing of anxiety and depression, temporarily reduces blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety, nociception blocking, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which may stimulate the release of endorphins and serotonin, preventing fibrosis or scar tissue, increasing the flow of lymph, and improving sleep.

Office messages.

This one is for you boss! Did you know that when you hire a massage practitioner and give out 15-minute chair massages to your employees, it will stimulate their body and give them a jolt of alertness and their brain wave activity is stimulated? The same feeling is known as the “runners high”. They will love you for it and be more inclined to want to work harder for your company.

PMS reliever.

Learn your significant others PMS cycle. When you do, treat them to a massage. Not only will you make them extremely happy, the massage reduces symptoms of pain, water retention, and mood swings. It’s a win-win for you.

When not to get a massage.

Avoid massages if you have:

  • A slipped disk. (This may increase irritation to the nerves or to the nerve roots.
  • Rashes. (May irritate or spread the infection or even transfer to the practitioner).
  • High blood pressure (consult with your doctor about getting a massage. Some forms of massage may increase your blood pressure instead of lowering it).
  • Cancer (Make sure to consult your doctor and find a practitioner that knows not to stimulate certain glands. It could be detrimental).
  • Infectious diseases (such as the flu, diphtheria are a couple of examples. This may worsen matters).
  • Hernia. (helloooo)
  • Inflammation. (make sure your practitioner either avoids the inflamed areas or have your massage practitioner do an ice treatment during the massage to prevent a possible inflammation).
  • Osteoporosis (massage could be too intense for some people with this condition because of their brittle state).

How often

This all depends on your particular needs. If you have a lot of time and money, get one every day!  To be practical, once a week if you have a specific area that is causing you problems, twice a month if you have acute pain, once a month if you want to maintain your bodies health. If you wait till you need a massage you waited too long and it might take a couple of sessions to get you back to normal. Maintain your body so you don’t need a massage, but enough to make sure your body is functioning to it’s best condition possible. Take care of your body. You only are allowed one. xxx <3 A&L
